Smart glasses

People with hearing problems, visitors to our country and all spectators will have the opportunity to watch theatrical performances, and not only, with subtitles, through the use of augmented reality glasses (smart glasses). The reason for the research project, implemented by the Hellenic Foundation in collaboration with the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications of the NCSR. “Demokritos” and the company Hypertech.

The project is in the implementation phase and is estimated to next Spring, its pilot implementation will begin in theatrical performances at “Theater”, as well as in the interactive projections in “Dome”, his Virtual Reality Theater “Hellenic World”.

“This is an innovative project that gives access to culture and removes social exclusion,” he told Athens 9.84, the managing director of the Foundation for the Hellenic World, Dimitris Efraimoglou. “It’s an innovative method of watching live performances. The problem in live performances is the synchronization of the actor’s speech with the subtitles or subtitles. Synchronizing oral and written speech in a live performance is difficult and usually unsuccessful. Also another problem is the placement of subtitles either above the stage or below it, with the result that the viewer focuses there and not on the action of the show having an uncomfortable experience. What we want to make is a very thin pair of glasses which will not obstruct the viewing and on them will be displayed the subtitles, which, in addition, will be synchronized with the speech of the actor “.

“The application is addressed to all of us, e.g. are some moments in the theater where we do not listen well or miss the words of the actor, however, it will be very useful for the deaf, hard of hearing, the elderly and the elderly and tourists as you will now be able to watch a Greek show in the language they want “, he points out Mr. Efraimoglou. “Currently, English translation will be available. Greeks will also be able to attend an English-language performance in Greek. It is a pioneering and innovative research project that offers equal access to culture for all people. We hope that the public will embrace it and will be used accordingly. To him September 2022, we hope it will happen the official presentation of the project “.

The project is implemented within its framework Action I research – I create – I innovate co-financed by European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union and national resources through OP Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship & Innovation (EPANEK).
